A computer hooks up to the Internet through a modem. A modem allows you to receive or send out information onto the Internet using your phone line. The fastest modems that have been standardized are the 33.6 Kbps V34 modems. The WebTV has this modem encased in the box so you do not have to assemble, install, or configure it.

This modem may run at 33.6 Kbps but the compression technology is faster than any modem I've ever seen. I competed the WebTV against a Fractal T1 connection(128 Kbps) and the WebTV accessed a website at the same time. It was a tie. The only difference was that the Fractal T1 connect was a $600 a month connection and the WebTV is only $19.95 A MONTH!!

BOTTOM LINE: You can access the Internet much faster with WebTV than using a computer.
